📅 Date: 8 August
🎯 Organised by: Target CSF Leaks
📍 First observed: 2025
On 8 August 2025, Target CSF Leaks marked its first anniversary by launching the first-ever National CSF Leak Awareness Day.
It was a day dedicated to shining a light on spinal and cranial CSF leaks, sharing vital information, and uniting patients, carers, and healthcare professionals in the fight for faster diagnosis and better care.
Thank You for Making History
We want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who:
- Shared our awareness posts across social media
- Joined our Open Virtual Leaky Café Call to connect with others who truly understand life with a CSF leak
- Entered our anniversary raffle and helped raise funds for our work
- Took time to learn about the signs, treatment options, and system changes needed for CSF leak care
Your support means that CSF leaks are no longer hidden in the shadows. The conversation has started, and it’s growing.
Highlights from 2025
Our awareness campaign ran throughout the day, sharing:
- The HEAD acronym – a simple memory aid for recognising potential CSF leak symptoms
- Red flag signs such as orthostatic headaches
- Why lumbar punctures are not a reliable diagnostic tool for CSF leaks
- First-line treatment options like blood patches, including when they may not be effective
- The urgent need for system change so more hospitals can treat patients locally
- Personal advocacy tips for those navigating diagnosis and care
CSF leaks are real.
They are life-altering.
And they are too often missed.
💡 Why This Day Matters
CSF leaks are often misdiagnosed, leading to unnecessary suffering and long delays in treatment. By making them a recognised part of the national awareness calendar, we aim to:
- Help more patients get timely diagnosis and care
- Reduce the travel burden on patients seeking specialist treatment
- Encourage more clinicians to develop the skills to treat leaks locally
🎨 Historic Themes
We aim to add to this list each year to track the themes and focus areas of National CSF Leak Awareness Day.
